A Day at Tahoe Community Nursery School

  • At 9 a.m. when the school begins, children are greeted at the door by teachers and made to feel welcome. They deposit their jackets in their cubbies and are off to explore their nursery school.

  • About 9:30, children will sit down for the "gathering:" a special time when we sit around a circle, dance, share books, tell our news (good and bad). This is also a time to use our imaginations. We pretend that we are elephants walking on strings or rainbows chased by a moose. Children learn about the date, day, month, year, and weather; they have sharing time, and teachers talk about the theme of the month.

    Then, children do an arts and crafts project, a mural, or maybe just play: at the sand table, in the airplane, with our small balance beam and carpet stepping stairs.

    At 10:30 each child is expected to help clean up. Shortly after, we take a bathroom break (we encourage the children to become self-sufficient in the bathroom).

    At 11, we are hungry so we eat our snack, served by the children. We drink our juice in our own cups. And we Sing:

    We are happy, we are sad,
    Sometimes joyful, Sometimes mad;
    When we eat our snack today,
    We will all shout, "Hurray!"

  • Then we dress for the outdoors and go out to play. We have a magical playground with Maurice the Dragon, places to make mud pies, swings, castles, and lots of room for imagination.

    School time is over, over

    It's time for us to go.
